Qualifying for the Holy Ghost Helps People Be Temple Ready

Instruction from Elder David A. Bednar

Striving for the companionship of the Holy Ghost helps us prepare to receive the blessings available in the Lord’s house. Doctrine and Covenants 109:15 teaches four important principles, expressed during the Kirtland Temple dedicatory prayer, that will help us prepare for the temple.

And that they may grow up in thee, and receive a fulness of the Holy Ghost, and be organized according to thy laws, and be prepared to obtain every needful thing;

(Doctrine and Covenants 119:15)

I.

That they may grow up in Thee. Consider the spiritual connection between the principle of “grow[ing] up in thee” and that of being spiritually reborn. We are spiritual infants as we are born again and begin to become new creatures in Christ. Just as a child grows up, so each of us “grows up” and becomes more spiritually mature over time as we come unto the Savior and honor our covenants. Seeking to know the Lord’s doctrine line upon line helps us to enter the house of the Lord prepared to serve, worship, and learn.

II.

That they may receive a fulness of the Holy Ghost. In a similar way, as we “grow up” in the Lord and become more spiritually mature, we gain a deeper appreciation for the blessings associated with the gift of the Holy Ghost. As we do, we are drawn to the Lord’s holy house to learn of Him.

III.

That they may be organized according to Thy laws. The phrase “be organized according to Thy laws” points us to both the family and eternity. As the Holy Ghost bears witness of the eternal nature of family relationships, our desire to be in the Lord’s house and learn of the plan of happiness increases.

IV.

That they may be prepared to receive every needful thing. The process of taking upon ourselves the name of Jesus Christ begins with baptism and confirmation and continues in the house of the Lord. As we partake of the sacrament each week, we also are looking forward to the greater blessings and promises we learn about in His house.
